On Getting Into The Wheelbarrow…
I heard the conclusion of the wheelbarrow story the other day. When the tightrope walker asked for a volunteer to get into the wheelbarrow and be pushed across, several hundred feet off the ground, he was met with complete silence. Finally a little five year-old boy ran forward, got into the wheelbarrow and was pushed across safely. When the little chap got back on terra firma, people gathered around and asked him how he had been so brave. His reply was simple – “But why should I have been afraid? It was my dad who was pushing me!”
So I made the momentous decision to get into the wheelbarrow! And I’m being trundled across the tightrope at the moment. The future is very unsure, but sitting in this wheelbarrow, I’m learning several lessons. Waiting patiently for one! I’m not too good at that. My Father and I have had some skirmishes. I want to stand up and assert my independence. All that seems to do is cause the wheelbarrow to wobble dreadfully! I wanted to give up at one point. Waiting patiently for Him to lead me is one thing; waiting aimlessly with no glimmer of hope to keep my spirits up is another! So I thought I’d opt out of this deal. Unfortunately, getting into the wheelbarrow kind of restricts your actions. You can either continue to go ahead or stop and not go anywhere. Deciding to get out is not an option, unless you have a parachute handy! (I think I’ve belaboured this metaphor a little too long!)
What am I trying to say? God and I came to a crossroad a while back. I figured, the Christian life is nothing if not an adventure. The point was, was I willing to completely let go and trust Him to see me across? I don’t think I ever took a risk before. (I like to have a well-ordered life with small schedules for every event!)
Anyway, I took the risk and got in. I still have no idea what the future is, but the assurance is that my heavenly Dad is pushing the wheelbarrow, so I have nothing to fear. He doesn’t need my help to push me across, however many alternative plans my mind throws up! All I need to do is sit tight, without rocking the wheelbarrow, and wait till I reach the other side (and I don’t mean Heaven here, though that would be applicable too!) He asked me to get into the wheelbarrow; He’ll make sure I reach safely, however perilous the journey may be. Just having Him for company every moment of the day, makes this worth it!
